SNP President Ian Hudghton MEP joined forces with World Horse Welfare campaigners in Brussels at an event this week to further their campaign to end Europe's single biggest abuse of horses.

Around 130,000 European citizens including many in Scotland have signed the Make A Noise petition calling for an end to the long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter in Europe. The petition was presented in the European Parliament on 30 September.

Mr. Hudghton commented:

"I am not surprised that many thousands of people have signed this Petition. It is a scandal that the regulations which already exist at EU level are being routinely flouted in many mainland EU countries. The first priority in response to this Petition must be a commitment by the European Commission to do its job and to demand that EU member states comply with current animal welfare regulations."
