Ian Hudghton (Greens/EFA), − It is appropriate that we are voting on media freedom on the day that the BBC has announced £5 million extra funding for coverage of Scotland's independence referendum. This report highlights the fundamental importance of a free media in any democracy and the £5 million boost must be used to enhance Scotland's democratic process. This will require the BBC to offer a balanced approach to the independence debate - and not to regard itself as a guardian of the British state.
